Step Three
Every man and woman who has joined A.A. and intends to stick has, without
realizing it, made a beginning on Step Three. Isn’t it true that in all matters
touching upon alcohol, each of them has decided to turn his or her life over
to the care, protection, and guidance of Alcoholics Anonymous? Already a
willingness has been achieved to cast out one’s own will and one’s own
ideas about the alcohol problem in favor of those suggested by A.A.

- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, (Step Three) p. 35

Thought to Ponder
When alcohol beat me to my knees,
I found I was right where I needed to be.

My name is Hope, alkie! I wasn't exactly surrendered but I was willing. I had seen proof, personally, that I didn't understand. I didn't have to understand! I just had to be willing. Whew, even that is too complicated...ha! I knew, when I cried out to God that something shifted inside. That humbled me enough to be willing to try. That is all it took to make a beginning, being willing to try. In fact my first 3rd Step was a commitment to come to the first AA meeting available every day. Each day! I no longer had to decide. I made that one global decision. Gradually I have grown in my commitment to God - to surrender, to a joyful surrender, I say. It is a good life sober, many years now from a humble beginning. Knees = Keys.
