"Selfish?"
"I can see why you are disturbed to hear some A.A. speakers say, "A.A. is a selfish
program.' The word 'selfish' ordinarily implies that one is acquisitive, demanding, and
thoughtless of the welfare of others. Of course, the A.A. way of life does not at all imply
such undesirable traits. We are of no value to anyone, including ourselves, until we find
salvation from alcohol. Therefore, our own recovery and spiritual growth have to come
first -- a right and necessary kind of self-concern."
- As Bill Sees It, No. 81

Hope, alkie. When a reading seems to not apply, I look harder. There is always a nugget. I may miss it. My family used to call me selfish, from childhood. I didn't get it. When my first husband sobered up I called him selfish. He went every night to a meeting! Of course, coming home to me drunk on the couch. How selfish of us both. I was told emphatically in AA to counter selfishness to never turn down an AA request. That humbled me! In turn that gave me the gift of forgetting self. So these days I feel selfish, asking for help when all of us need. Neighbors, friends, and my fellows. If I follow the directions in the Steps, it works on my outlook still. Less me, more empathy for others. And even ways to be useful. Sometimes just a call to ask about them instead of calling to complain. That is a mundane example but a big improvement personally. Bless us all dears.
