The Dark Past
Showing others who suffer how we were given help is the very
thing which makes life seem so worth while to us now. Cling to
the thought that, in God's hands, the dark past is the greatest
possession you have—the key to life and happiness for others.
With it you can avert death and misery for them.

- Alcoholics Anonymous, (The Family Afterward) p. 124

Thought to Ponder
We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.

Hi all. I'm Kevin, a reasonably happy alcoholic and a member of AA. This stuck out to me. Showing others who suffer how we were given help is the very thing which makes life seem so worth while to us now... the dark past is... the key to life and happiness for others. This doesn't mean just the stuff that happened when we were drinking. It's today's problems too. Today I have a few days under my belt. And when I share I try to show the newcomer that we suffer just as they are. My dark past could have been yesterday. So I share my defects of character that I go through on a daily basis. And show others how I use the Spiritual Program of AA, the 12 Steps, to bring my life into a manageable life with God's hands. We all have dark spots in our lives and we need to keep working the Steps to keep our lives so we can comprehend the word serenity and know peace. The 12 Steps are not something gone through once and then forgotten, they are a set of rules for living. Just remember my friends this is a lifetime journey. Enjoy the blessings and learn from the pain. Thanks for the meeting, and letting me share.
