No Effective Mental Defense
Once more: The alcoholic at certain times has no effective mental
defense against the first drink. Except in a few rare cases, neither
he nor any other human being can provide such a defense.
His defense must come from a Higher Power.

Thought to Ponder
I can't. He can. I'll ask Him to.

Paul, alcoholic. I am sitting here thinking of my last drink 46 plus years ago. I awoke on the bathroom floor and pulled myself up and stared into the mirror. I saw the reflection of a falling down drunk and it was me. I no longer could deny it. Then I thought of all the ways I had tried to quit drinking, all the promises I had made not to drink and all the failures. That is when I turned to God, an entity I knew little of. I cried out and admitted there was nothing I could do to remain sober. I needed help. Since then I have not drank. Some 18 years later I found myself in a dark basement getting ready to do some wash. I picked up the bottle of detergent and discovered that it was another's secret stash of booze. Just what I needed ... I had been suffering in physical pain for several months and I was at my wits end. Then I thought of a section of the big book. There will come a day when the only thing that stands between you and a drink is God. Truly He saved me that day and keeps me sober each and every day. There is nothing I can do on my own to remain sober. "May you find him now." Thank you.
