Self-reliance Failed Us
Wasn’t it because self-reliance failed us? Self-reliance was good
as far as it went, but it didn’t go far enough. Some of us once had
great self-confidence, but it didn’t fully solve the fear problem, or
any other. When it made us cocky, it was worse. Perhaps there is
a better way—we think so. For we are now on a different basis;
the basis of trusting and relying upon God.

My name is Woody and I am an alcoholic. I can really relate to this reading. For me it is the cart before the horse thing, God's will versus my will. I consider God's will working the program. If I am in God's will, I am putting the program first and others first. I am not just going through the motions. When I get into my will, I want more of everything, wins, excitement, money, whatever it may be. I can ease into my will without recognizing it. When I achieve the benefits of God's will, I can slip into my own will and try to build on those benefits. That can work for a short period of time until the wins cease. When that happens, I am left with the two glaring defects the reading referenced. I am either full of fear or discontented with the very things I was chasing or both. It is easy to get into my will, but now it is also easy to get back into God's will. I do that through action. I begin honestly working the program again. His will works and mine does not. Thank you for letting me share.
