Everyday Companion
Alcohol became my everyday companion. At first, I considered it a friend;
later, it became a heavy load I couldn’t get rid of. It turned out to be much
more powerful than I was, even if, for many years, I could stay sober for
short periods. I kept telling myself that one way or another I would get rid
of alcohol. I was convinced I would find a way to stop drinking. I didn’t want
to acknowledge that alcohol had become so important in my life. Indeed,
alcohol was giving me something I didn’t want to lose.

Thought to Ponder
Alcohol gave me wings to fly, then it took away the sky.

Laverne here. Alcoholic. This reading describes my experience with alcohol to a tee. I was a daily drinker. I considered alcohol my friend. There were many times I tried to quit drinking but I couldn’t stay stopped for long. I was convinced that alcohol was giving me something I didn’t want to lose. When I drank I was cool until I passed out or blacked out. The passing out is what really got my attention. I knew my body was telling me something. I knew that I needed help. Serious medical help. When the doctors and social workers told me to check out AA I didn’t argue. AA has surely replaced my drinking. AA has given my existence new life and meaning. I definitely have a primary purpose today. And that is to stay sober and to help others to achieve sobriety. Grateful for the new life. Thanks for letting me share.
