Match Calamity With Serenity
Perhaps there is a better way—we think so. For we are now on a different
basis; the basis of trusting and relying upon God. We trust infinite God rather
than our finite selves. We are in the world to play the role He assigns. Just to
the extent that we do as we think He would have us, and humbly rely on Him,
does He enable us to match calamity with serenity.

- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, (Step Eleven) p. 102

Thought to Ponder
Serenity isn't freedom from the storm; it is peace within the storm.

My name is Woody and I am an alcoholic. I had surgery recently and had to pay a huge bill out of pocket. I was talking to someone in the house earlier and they said, "oh yeah, you got something else from the surgery center." My mind immediately wanted to go to fear and anger as I walked into the living room, but I stopped myself and thought "maybe it's not another bill." Then I thought, for some reason, "maybe it's a check." I opened it and it was a check refunding about half of the amount I had paid up front for the surgery. I know this seems stupid and irrelevant and I normally wouldn't share about such things. The point of the story is not that I received a check. That is not what this program is about. It is not about me receiving cash and prizes for attempting to live right and stay abstinent from alcohol. The point is that I gave faith a chance. In the past I would have moved from fear to anger to resentment before I even reached the living room. I would assume that it was another bill and that would be just another example of how life isn't fair, I am never going to get ahead, something like this all ways happens, blah, blah blah. I was able to match potential calamity with serenity. I paused. This program offers so many tools if we will just use them. Thank you for letting me share.
