Self-forgetting
Grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted
-- to understand, than to be understood -- to love, than to be loved.
For it is by self-forgetting that one finds.

- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 99

Thought to Ponder . . .
If I self-forget I find.

My name is Sam, and I’m an alcoholic. “To thine own self be true” -- very confusing guidance. When I was drinking, that meant I could do what I wanted because I needed to be true to myself; to say what I wanted, because that's how I felt, regardless of the pain it caused. I’d follow my instincts because nothing is more real than our instincts and drives, right? So it went as I hurt those around me while being true to what I thought was my real self. Well, what I learned in AA, in the rooms, the Big Book, and my sponsor was that my so-called real self was a moron primate called Mr. Hyde with the brain of a peanut, thanks to the poison I was drinking daily. Now I pray to my Higher Power to remove that along with my other lovely defects of character so I can begin the spiritual process of self-forgetting. What I think a lot of time is my misguided will born of Mr. Hyde, and when I pray the Eleventh Step prayer it's to forget my little self and be a part of the big Self. I hope this helps someone because, for me, my petty selfish concerns took me down. I pray for my Higher Power's will for me and the power to carry it out daily. I'm a work in progress as we all are. Thanks everyone for helping me stay sober One Day at a Time.
