Letting Go
When we look back, we realize that things which came to us
when we put ourselves in God's hands
were better than anything we could have planned.

- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 99

Thought to Ponder . . .
Take a walk with God; He will meet you at the Steps.

Hi all, I am Betty, an alcoholic. My reaction to God/Higher Power when I got to AA was that God doesn't tap me on the shoulder and tell me, ‘hey Betty, this is My will for you today, or this is what I want you to do.’ My first Higher Power in AA was God as I don't understand Him/Her/It -- along with G O D = Group Of (sober) Drunks. I figured that somehow the sober AAs who were introducing me to how to work AA, were doing HP's will -- they knew what they were doing; I didn't. So I followed instructions on how to work the 12 Steps by working the Steps as best I could on my own for the first couple of years. I finally heard the suggestions to get a sponsor, work the Steps with the sponsor, and finally really listened to the Promises being read in a meeting and identified. I am sure this was done before but for whatever reason, I just didn't register it. I heard what I needed to hear, apparently, when I heard it, as I was sober for the first couple years of sobriety, and I can hope that this is HP's way of making sure that I was working the Steps correctly. I didn't drink in those first 2 years, nor have I had a drink to today a day at a time since 8/26/1983. I hope and believe that I worked Step 1 adequately, as I heard in AA that this is the Step I have to do 100% or I might slip. So far I have not had a slip and work every day to add some insurance to my sobriety. Page 85 in the Big Book tells me that my sobriety is contingent on a daily reprieve from a Higher Power, and I believe it. I believe that I must keep my practice of the 12 Steps in practice for HP to grace me with another day of sobriety today currently in practice. I am sure there is a God/Higher Power. I am equally sure that I am not God/Higher Power. I am equally sure again that I am working HP's will in my life to the best of my ability as, so far, I am sober today a day at a time. I am sure that the "interesting coincidences" that have occurred during my sober life during times of chaos, stress, etc., had something to do with being resolved by my HP, even though HP has still not tapped me on the shoulder yet and said, ‘Hey Betty this is what My will is for your life today.’ All I have to do is work on the Steps and on my conscious contact with HP and trust in HP today and do service and carry the message that AA works if I work it. It can work for you, too. Thanks for letting me share.
