Action
Step Three calls for affirmative action,
for it is only by action that we can cut away the self-wil
l which has always blocked the entry of God --
or, if you like, a Higher Power into our lives. . .
Step Three represents our first attempt to do this.

- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 34

Thought to Ponder . . .
We surrender to win.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .

Hi, I'm Peter, a recovered alcoholic. Surrendering is probably the last thing to not drinking I ever wanted to do -- until my last drunk. All I really remember of that day was the fight was gone in me. I wanted to drink but, intellectually, I knew I couldn't, faced with all the emotional, physical, and financial straits I was in. I got to an AA meeting, and a guy said something to me that makes a ton of sense to me even today, that when we surrender, we're going over to the winning side and letting the program show us how to win. That’s what AA has done for me. I've been shown a new way to think and live, as well as how to get rid of that compulsion to drink. And that was by going to a lot of face-to-face meetings, finding a sponsor who knew how to work the Steps and worked them, and then to just do them. And today, I've been sober a while, been through a lot of "stuff," and still don't drink over things. I think I got to that point in working the Steps like it says in the Big Book, where I'm sort of neutral about alcohol but I know it’s just a daily reprieve if I don't keep working and doing the program as it’s laid out. So, if you're new to AA, all this can work for you, too if you do it and not just think about it. It’s an action program, just like surrendering is; it’s an action. Thanks for letting me share.
