Honesty
The perverse wish to hide a bad motive underneath a good one
permeates human affairs from top to bottom.
This subtle and elusive kind of self-righteousness can undermine
the smallest act or thought.
Learning daily to spot, admit, and correct those flaws
is the essence of character-building and good living.

- As Bill Sees It, p. 17

Thought to Ponder . . .
Honesty isn't an event -- it's a process.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .
H O W = Honesty, Open-mindedness, Willingness.

I'm Dave, an alcoholic, grateful to be here today with you all sober and clean. Like many, I had to make changes throughout sobriety. Either that, or go back to the lying, stealing, cheating, lonely existence of numbing self with drink or more. Once I started clearing up in AA at meetings and service commitments and listening to long-timers share, I realized I needed to change – stopping the drink was not nearly enough for me. I had never learned how to deal with life and life issues in a mature, healthy way -- I just didn't know without a substance in my body. So I began Step work, continued meetings, and listened. One by one, a simple change was made; some more simple than others, but the number one thing I had to do was learn to say ‘no’ to old friends and people I knew who weren't friends -- even my family. I didn't have to yell “NO!” I could gently say, "No thanks," and they went away, one by one. I also needed to change my daily routine, incorporate prayer first thing and last thing each day and, Number One: Get honest with myself, my sponsor, my Higher Power, really everyone, and today I'm almost 99 percent honest. For some reason, I went to Wal-Mart once and was late getting home. My wife asked why I took so long. Rather than tell her the truth that I was looking at something we couldn't afford, I said lines were long. Small, but I said to self, “where did that come from?” So, I'm human, but I'm generally an honest person now. So I'll keep coming back and helping out where I can, hit meetings, continue Step work, and talk to my Higher Power. It’s a small price to pay my friends, compared to a 24/7 life of hell. Thanks all. Peace.
