Tolerance
We begin to see that all people, including ourselves,
are to some extent emotionally ill as well as frequently wrong,
and then we approach true tolerance
and see what real love for our fellows really means.

They call me Hugh, and I am an alcoholic who didn't drink today. I am thankful for the freedom I was, and still am, given to be wrong in this program. I remember when I did not see myself as the same as you. I would complain to my sponsor about something someone did or said. He would laugh heartily and say, "We all do that!" After quite a number of times of his responding that way I got the message. It is about unity for the individual to recover. After some time in AA I have come to love you here. Through working my program (with soooo much help) I realized I am not perfect. Also, in the Daily Reflections, it says none of us are perfect spiritually and not emotionally perfect. Some days I come in here not feeling so good and someone says something that is so uplifting to me. A friend of mine once said, "This is not a race." This is not competition; we hold each other up on a daily basis. Yes, I am thankful for the mistakes I was allowed to make. I am so glad I don't remember most of the things I said years ago -- I would only be too judgmental of myself if I did remember. Tolerance leads to love, and I am where I love you as you are. I have learned to apply the same principle at home and work. Today, I have a boss who is the worst I have ever had. I was going to quit 1000's of times but I didn't -- today, I love her. I have been in AA for over 30 years now -- love has kept me here. Thanks.
