Hope
Each day, somewhere in the world,
recovery begins when one alcoholic talks with another alcoholic
sharing experience, strength, and hope.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. xxii
Thought to Ponder . . .
Modem-to-modem or face-to-face, AA's speak the language of the heart.
Hope is the key that unlocks the door of discouragement.

Hi Family, I'm Deb and I am an alcoholic. When we share about hope, I get all sentimental. I remember how hopeless I was before I came in .. drinking wasn't working to quiet the chaos in my head anymore. I tried and tried my way to stop and stay stopped, but nothing I did worked. The obsession was stronger than I, and then the first drink had me. One afternoon, I came online looking for information about alcoholics. Of course, it was another attempt to do it my way. I stumbled upon the AA chat room. It scared me half to death. I'd never been in a chat room, and when I logged in, they all said, "Hi Deb!" I thought they must have thought I was someone else because I didn't know any of those people .. those names on the screen. I took it in quietly for a bit, and then finally asked for help or information. A woman agreed to chat one-on-one with me after she got her boys from school. So we met up a while later and she told me her story. I cried all through it. I cried for her, and I cried for myself. She had dug deeper than I, and when she was finished, she said, "I can't tell you much about AA; I'm only 28 days sober." Holy moly! 28 days! That was more than I had ever been able to put together. And right then, I thought if she could do it, then maybe, just maybe, I could too. The message of hope was given to me that day, and I returned the next day, without a drink. And I have been sober since. None of us would stay in AA if we didn't see the hope .. and not just that first initial hope .. but the hope we get through the strength of the program and the fellowship and our Higher Power. We receive hope to trudge through 'Life 101,' through deaths, divorces, and teenagers. And that is huge! I didn't have hope before, but with a HP more powerful than I, and program for living, the unlimited strength of the fellowship, I receive hope each day. If you're new, we all started with those first days, weeks and months. It is a simple program, but we've got to do the work. What we can't do, our Higher Power will do for us. By the grace of God, the program of AA, and the goodness of the fellowship, I am sober today. Thank you.
