Change
The essence of all growth is a willingness to change for the better
and then an unremitting willingness to shoulder whatever responsibility this entails.

Joannie here, an alkie for sure. I woke up this morning remembering the many years that I woke up hungover on New Year's Day thinking, "This has to stop! I will stop drinking today." Of course, by noon I'd convinced myself holidays don't count. It was a vicious cycle .. getting up in the morning trying to hold off that first drink until at least 10am. The only thing that saved me from drinking earlier was my job. Not my kids; not my husband. I knew I had to work, and that job required me to be sober. But when summer came all bets were off -- no work, so I was free to make a fool of myself daily. It wasn't until I found AA that I knew that there was hope for me even though I was doubtful, because I thought I was worse than any of you folks. I went through all the things we all do when fighting change. I don't think anyone hates change more than an alcoholic, but I knew I must or die. I was blessed in this program right away -- no, I didn't stop drinking right away but I found out that I still had a chance with God. I thought I'd burned all those bridges years ago. Change came very slowly for this drunk, but it did start when I took that First Step. To admit that I was powerless over alcohol came as a shock really, but when I worked that Step with a sponsor I found out just how powerless I was. Of course, my life was in shambles. Once on the course of change, we find it isn't as difficult as it seemed. As we go through the Steps we begin to breathe easier. I still don't like change today, but at least I am open to trying it because I know I have you all behind me and most of all, I have God leading the way. Thank you all for letting me share.
