Promises
We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.
Are these extravagant promises?  We think not.
They are being fulfilled among us -- sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly.
They will always materialize if we work for them.

- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 84

I'm Jim, an alkie from Ohio.  I am reminded of AA's Ninth Step promises which are read at most meetings in my area.  Two things stand out .. first, is that these are Step Nine promises and are not "promised" until we are half-way through making our 9th Step amends, and this is after we have worked Steps One through Eight.  All too often we treat these promises as if they were Step One promises.  The second thing that stands out is what I think is the critical promise: that God will do for us what we cannot do for ourselves.  And all to often we (and I include myself) emphasize the first part -- God will do for us -- and forget the second part that He will do only what we cannot do for ourselves.  Thanks for letting me share.
