Complacency
It is easy to let up on the spiritual program of action and rest on our laurels.
We are headed for trouble if we do, for alcohol is a subtle foe.
We are not cured of alcoholism. What we really have
is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition.

Thought to Ponder . . .
The alcoholic is in no greater peril than when he takes sobriety for granted.

I'm Claudia and I'm an alcoholic. I guess I learned the hard way to never be presumptuous and say that I am done drinking. I had ten years in AA; seven good sober years, and three around the program but not working it. When I got full of myself and said, "I'm done drinking" and got away from meetings and service, I realized the lie I was telling myself was, "I'm done drinking like that." But I was not. I did go back out after 10 years, and picked up where I left off before much time at all passed. Quickly, I once again did not know, and certainly did not like, the woman I saw in the mirror. I had learned enough over the years that my drinking was ruined, if that makes sense. And because I'm an alcoholic, I could not "control" my consumption. There are a lot of 'not yets' in my life, but they wait in the curtain call line if I slack off ever again from my meetings, service, and most importantly perhaps, my rigorous honesty in my Tenth Step. God is at the top of my recovery, and it is He who brought me to AA all those years ago, and God apparently has a plan for my life and for bringing me back. I know I am blessed. Many die and do not ever make it back. So for me today I have a reprieve from drinking because I am feeding my spiritual self through meetings, service, study, and sponsoring others. Thanks for letting me share.
