Acceptance
When I stopped living in the problem and began living in the answer, the problem went away.
From that moment on, I have not had a single compulsion to drink.
And acceptance is the answer to all my problems today.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 417
Thought to Ponder . . .
My serenity is directly proportional to my level of acceptance.

Hello, I'm Charlie J., and I have Alcoholism. When the doctor in detox diagnosed me as a chronic alcoholic, I couldn't have been happier. For the first time I knew what my real problem was: I had Alcoholism! That same doctor empowered me by saying, "... and you're the only one who can do something about it." Really? Nothing I ever did before helped. Then he said, "... and if you want to stay stopped, you have to go back to AA." I thought, AA? Why would I go back to AA .. it didn't work the first time? But I sensed deep inside myself that the doctor had my best interest at heart. So, back to AA I came. Then I found that acceptance is a good thing, but just a bare beginning. There was work to be done. First, finding what was broken in me. Then accepting it, and then knowing it didn't have to stay broken, was a great relief. But it would take even more work to root out the old and replace it with the new. That new way of looking at all my life's problems has been a great help in first accepting what the life problem is, and working to deal with it in a more healthy way. I have not been able to solve all my life's problems. The gift for me has been the willingness to do the right thing when I knew what that was. Mistakes? Yup! But there was an underlying willingness to learn from them .. a life saver. So if you're new, I suggest that who you are today is not the person you will be one year from now if you are willing to do the work. Thank you.
