Guilt
Day by day, we try to move a little toward God's perfection.
So we need not to be consumed by maudlin guilt
for failure to achieve His likeness and image by Thursday next.
Progress is our aim, and His perfection is the beacon, light-years away, that draws us on.
- As Bill Sees It, p. 15
Thought to Ponder . . .
Guilt is in the past; worry is the future. Both are manifestations of ego.

Hi all, I'm John, an alcoholic. I was riddled with guilt and shame when I came into recovery. My friend alcohol had stopped masking the associated feelings no matter how much I drank. After a nudge from the judge as a result of my becoming everything I hated, an abusive self-indulgent alkie like my father, I began to work my Steps slowly over time through a lot of pain. Honesty with myself made me realize just how sick I had become. A positive-thinking sponsor was quick to point out all the good service I had done in AA to date, how far I had come, and listened without judgment to my Fifth Step. Phew! What a load off that was -- all those years burdened with guilt. Then my sponsor showed me how to overcome the past I was so ashamed of. He said self-esteem comes from estimable living. Little by little I began living my life with sponsor guidance and a tight bond with my Higher Power. Today, all the crud doesn't shame me anymore. Instead, I see how I can live and grow without the guilt. So I'll keep it up. So far, so good! Thanks.
