The Gift
To those of us who have hitherto known only excitement, depression, or anxiety
-- in other words, to all of us --
this newfound peace is a priceless gift.
- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 74
Thought to Ponder . . .
Sobriety is a gift, the price of which is eternal vigilance.
AA-related 'Alconym' . . .

Mab here, alcoholic. The program has given me a life, self-respect, my family, a career, a passion for living despite roadblocks and my own flaws. There are so many unexpected gifts amidst the chaos of living, all because of my Altered Attitude created by the program. I've found in counting my blessings that there is also a gift or gifts in every problem, failure, misfortune. Usually, when some one thing goes wrong, my tendency is to feel that all, everything, absolutely all is wrong. And believe it, if one looks, there is a lot wrong with me, with you, and with the world, and the list can be endless if that is what I focus on. I decided to change my perspective, ergo .. out of every wrong at least three good things happen: 1) there is a lesson to be learned, 2) growth happens if I let it and face things squarely and with AA principles, 3) the experience can be used to help others and myself. And besides that, usually there are an umpteen other blessings in life to compensate .. is umpteen a number? You can tell I'm not a math major! So, if the focus is on the benefits, gifts, pleasures, gains and accomplishments in sobriety, the sun shines again, and I quit snarling at others and happy serene sobriety is restored. Simple (when I work it), and definitely one of the greatest gifts of all is all of you who share joys and solaces of life with me and this room. We are totally blessed 100,000,000 times over! Howz that for infinite numbers? Love to all.
