Growth
Growth and understanding came slowly, but they came steadily.
And finally, I could feel gratitude for my sobriety -- for the saving grace of God.
Now I feel totally free, because I know the truth about myself. . .
I know that spiritual growth is a great, wide, beautiful thing
and that I have only stepped up to the open door.

Hello! Jenny, an alcoholic, here. The most important and the best thing I've gained from the program was getting myself back. I had no idea who I was when I got to AA. I was lost in a sea of booze and trying to find my way back to humanity. And then came spirituality as I continued to sober up. This has now become really important to me because without that I am lost again. It's my insurance against the next drink because I know in my heart my Higher Power doesn't want me to pick up again. I also gained a beautiful loving husband and can now live in a true human relationship. The Steps have helped me tremendously with that, for sure. I had no idea how to be a good wife or a good friend when all I cared about was booze. Life is not always easy, but I know from experience now that no matter what happens -- deaths, weddings, money issues, relationship ups and downs -- today I can get through these, as each has happened to me without picking up a drink. And for this alcoholic, that is a miracle that each day I keep growing more and more grateful for. I chaired a meeting today, and as I finished my share I began to tear up. And not because I was sad, oh gosh no, but because my heart became so full of gratitude it spilled out my eyes. Thanks to all of you for being here and listening to me today.
