Act of Providence
It is truly awful to admit that, glass in hand, we have warped our minds
into such an obsession for destructive drinking
that only an act of Providence can remove it from us.

Hello, I'm Charlie J., and I have Alcoholism. I did not stay stopped my first trip to AA. I had hit bottom alright but I was still running the show, you bet! So I drank again after 6 months and stayed that way, only far worse, for the next 4-1/2 years. I finally had what I pray will be my last drunk, had hit bottom, and was more than willing to take my life to end the suffering. Actually, my body gave out and I didn't need the shotgun. I just sat back in my rocker and sighed, "Thank God it's finally over." The next day, hung over and sick as a dog again, these words boomed in my mind -- "I can't have one more drink! This is killing me!" I had never thought like that, ever. The last thing on my mind was stopping for good. So after a detox I went back to AA. Old Joe B., my first AA buddy, explained what had happened, as I had no idea how I could think like that. He said, "You had a lucid moment." What? "A time where the grace of God entered and dispelled the obsession to drink long enough to see the truth about your drinking." That sounded good to me. So I started my recovery journey and have not had a wish nor a need for a drink since that time. Thank you.
