Obstinacy
Besides a seeming inability to accept much on faith, we often found ourselves handicapped
by obstinacy, sensitiveness, and unreasoning prejudice.
Many of us have been so touchy that even casual reference to spiritual things made us bristle with antagonism. . .
Faced with alcoholic destruction, we soon became as open minded on spiritual matters
as we had tried to be on other questions.
In this respect alcohol was a great persuader.  It finally beat us into a state of reasonableness.

- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, pp. 47-48

Thought to Ponder . . .
The clenched fist never receives.

Hello family, Lance here, alcoholic and grateful today for another reprieve from alcoholism.  I remember having a mind like a steel trap shut completely tight.  I remember thinking, "I don't care."  I tried to make it convincing, but in my gut I knew I did care somewhere.  It seems like every day was full of people sneering at me; putting me down.  And the more I tried to please, the worse it got.  I basically just wanted to be loved or liked and wanted your approval.  Ha! What an order!  I also remember thinking, in such a negative way, "Why even try, they won't like you and you will most likely mess it up."  This kind of fatal thinking is full of flaws, it's to resign from life.  And it very quickly shuts me off from the sunlight of the spirit.  I have to keep in mind I now have a good tool for dealing with most everything life tosses my way, or at least how I perceive it.  If I allow this kind of thinking to take over, it makes me a bear to be around -- and no one likes a complainer.  Our Higher Power has unlimited resources.  Tapping into that Source through prayer, meditation and service brings me into the realization of how great a thing we are dealing with.  It is infinite, wise, and loving. Thank you.
