Step Seven

"Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings."
To get completely away from our aversion to the idea of being humble,
to gain a vision of humility as the avenue to true freedom of the human spirit,
to be willing to work for humility as something to be desired for itself,
takes most of us a long, long time.

- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 73

Thought to Ponder . . .
Humility is not thinking less of myself, but thinking of myself less.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .
H O W = Honesty, Open-mindedness, Willingness.

My name is Hope, an alkie.  This topic is so big for me that I have a hard time still wrapping my mind around it.  I know deep down that I needed a secret ingredient -- still need -- to appreciate H.O.W.  That, for me, is Humility.  I truly thought I was extra-special sick.  I had the "yeah-buts," and after reading Chapter Three for the hundredth time, thank God my head cleared enough to recognize that I am not only not special, I am a cliché -- a text-book drunk.  So, into the Solution! is what I heard if I dwelt too much on 'the problem.'  I heard from another alkie, "How is that working for you, dear?"  Not real good.  There is a line I love in Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions (p. 73), "Rebellion dogs our every step at first."  Operative words: "at first."  Only at first, thank God.  None of this stuff worked for me until I tried it.
