Instincts
Creation gave us instincts for a purpose. Without them we wouldn't be complete human beings. . .
Yet, these instincts, so necessary for our existence, often far exceed their proper functions. . .
Nearly every serious emotional problem can be seen as a case of misdirected instinct.
When that happens, our great natural assets, the instincts, have turned into physical and mental liabilities.

Heya friends, I'm an alkie, and my problem is Chantale. It's struck me how funny it is that whatever I read in the literature, it always directly relates to me. I was reading Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions this morning on Step Four. It talks about our instincts, and got me thinking of how I have changed in the past few years. It's definitely not perfection, but progress nonetheless. Those basic God-given instincts are important. Equally important is to what rate I put them into play, because I can very easily go from having healthy instincts to go to the extreme and then they become unhealthy. Today, I can't say I've mastered anything, but I can say that when those defects pop up I no longer have the luxury of ignoring them. Because they are so obvious, and I know what the next right thing is, it's not easy in the least. But with AA, and the help of my Higher Power, it's totally possible. This program is not easy, but it's simple. I, on the other hand, complicate everything. That's why AA, a sponsor, and some sober friends who have walked this path come in handy because you have all been there. And for that, I am grateful -- that's for sure! Thanks for letting me share.
