Growing Up in AA
Life is meant to be lived by facing the challenges it brings.  Otherwise, I'm not living, just existing.
God didn't give me this gift of sobriety to sit in a rocking chair,
imagining myself as some old wise woman who has arrived somewhere.
There is no easier, softer way.

- The Best Of The Grapevine [Vol.3], p. 320

Thought to Ponder . . .
Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional, growing spiritually is up to me.

I'm Dotti, a grateful recovering alkie.  When I saw the topic, I thought, "more like 'growing old in AA.'"  Actually, it's growing up and growing old in AA.  I was a few months short of 50 when I got here, and I'll be 79 next month.  Unbelievable!  I had all sorts of bottoms in the 5 years before I got here -- emergency surgery for perforated ulcer, my only DWI, a couple of broken bones, hallucinations, etc.  But I had the strongest denial system.  I'd pick myself up and keep doing what I'd been doing.  Ignoring the fact that I'd almost killed myself.  They say you stop growing emotionally when you start drinking, so I was about 15 in a 50-year-old body.  What a wreck.  Fortunately, someone 12-Stepped me into the program and I've been here ever since.  I had the usual struggles .. not wanting anything to do with the God of my childhood, hanging onto anger and resentments.  You know the drill.  I did what I was told and went to Step-study meetings, got a sponsor, did 90 meetings in 90 days, accepted that there's Something, and I'm not it.  Life is not perfect.  I have had a number of issues recently.  The latest being a very dear friend of mine - a drinking buddy, a recovery buddy, committed suicide on July 1st.  That's been really hard.  But, you folks are here, and that's great.  I do need to get out to more face-to-face meetings, but this is a huge help.  Thank you all for being here.  Keep coming back.  It does work if you work it.
