Principles Before Personality
We of Alcoholics Anonymous believe that the principle of anonymity has an immense spiritual significance.
It reminds us that we are to place principles before personalities; that we are actually to practice a genuine humility.
This to the end that our great blessings may never spoil us;
that we shall forever live in thankful contemplation of Him who presides over us all.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, pp. 565-566
Thought to Ponder . . .
Anonymity is real humility at work.

I'm Jocelyn, alcoholic person. First of all, none of us is perfect and I don't think there is anyone who expects anyone to be. if we were, we wouldn't be human. My sobriety has to do with how I handle things, how I take things, and how I look at things. My job isn't to sugarcoat anything or walk on eggshells to please others. The wonderful thing about being sober is we learn a new freedom; a freedom to express ourselves and not hold things inside any longer. A freedom to be ourselves in good times or bad. We can learn who we are and express who we are. We all get frustrated at times, we have difficult days, and we have days where we take things personally. But then when we look at it again in a better light, find out that it isn't all about us at all. We all come from different backgrounds, different lifestyles, different ways of thinking and doing. And that's what makes us who we are. We aren't all the same and that's a good thing. And when I open myself up to understanding that someone else might live differently and believe differently than I, then I'm opening myself up to learning something new about the other person and about myself.
