Defects
I am no longer willing to live with the multitude of defects that characterized my life while I was drinking.
Step Seven is my vehicle to freedom from these defects.

Hi everyone, I'm Shawn, and I'm an alcoholic. One thing that used to confuse me about Step Seven was this: I used to think I was asking my Higher Power to please remove ALL of my character defects when that was not the case at all. The Big Book clearly states in Step Seven that we ask our HP to please help us to remove all of our character defects that stand in the way of being of service to our HP or to our fellows .. not every single character defect. If our HP could remove ALL of our character defects, then we would all be perfect and we know that is just not possible, nor is it something I strive for. I strive towards progress, not perfection. I just wanted to make that point clear, because it used to confuse me a lot when I first came to AA. Thanks for allowing me to share.
