Willingness
The essence of all growth is a willingness to change for the better
and then an unremitting willingness to shoulder whatever responsibility this entails.

- As Bill Sees It, p. 115

Thought to Ponder . . .
If faith without works is dead; then willingness without action is fantasy.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .
W H O = Willlingness, Honesty, Open-mindedness.

I'm Peyton, and I'm a grateful alcoholic.  There are many times I have had to pray for willingness.  My alkie ego, selfishness, etc., can raise their ugly heads and say, "Just do it YOUR way, Peyton."  My way never did work, except to keep me drunk.  There are a few lines in the Big Book [p. 58] that help me remember to remain willing: "If you have decided you want what we have and are willing to go to any length to get it -- then you are ready to take certain steps."  Into Action [p. 76], before the 6th Step, says, "We have emphasized willingness as being indispensable."  And my favourite, which is in the Appendix [p. 568] on Spiritual Experience, "Willingness, honesty and open-mindedness are the essentials of recovery.  But these are indispensable."  Without the willingness to do the work of this programme, aka the 12 Steps, the willingness to learn to trust others so that I can be honest with myself and them, to remain open-minded to the fact that I don't know it all, that the programme and Fellowship of AA can show me not only how to get sober, but to remain sober one day at a time, I will be doomed to drink again.  And for me (us) to drink again is to die.  Being willing sounds a lot better than that to me.  Thanks.
