Carrying the Message
To watch the eyes of men and women open with wonder as they move from darkness to light,
to see their lives quickly fill with new purpose and meaning, to see whole families reassembled,
to see the alcoholic outcast received back into his community in full citizenship,
and above all to watch these people awaken to the presence of a loving God in their lives --
these things are the substance of what we receive when we carry AA's message to the next alcoholic.
- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 110
Thought to Ponder . . .
In AA we carry the message ... not the mess.

Hi all, my name is Owen. I'm an alcoholic I haven't been to this meeting before, but I liked the lead very, very much. Thank you! On the topic of Carrying the Message, I thought first that had it not been for those kind people at my first group and first meetings helping me, I would have been home, miserable, and, no doubt, drunk. But as they consistently shared their experience, strength and hope, and I must say, practiced great tolerance for my character defects and general sour disposition, I might never have begun the Steps, got a sponsor, or become an active sober member of Alcoholics Anonymous. I am eternally grateful to them. I simply do what I was taught to do in the beginning. You see, it was all true and all good solid advice from experience. Over the years there have been so very many different opportunities to help carry the message -- sharing at meeting, sponsoring (helping others through the Steps), one-on-one sharing (speaking from the heart), and public speaking as a formal service commitment. I guess there are endless opportunities available. It just takes a wee bit of willingness to get out of myself and think of the others. Very little effort on my part but such great rewards. Truly. Thanks all for being here and helping me stay sober one more day.
