Willingness
A beginning, even the smallest, is all that is needed.
Once we have placed the key of willingness in the lock and have the door ever so slightly open,
we find that we can always open it some more.
Though self-will may slam it shut again, as it frequently does,
it will always respond the moment we again pick up the key of willingness.
- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 35
Thought to Ponder . . .
What have I been given today? Am I willing to reach out and grasp it?
AA-related 'Alconym' . . .
W H O = Willingness, Honesty, Open-mindedness.

Hello everyone, I'm glad to be here with you. I'm Charlie J., and I have Alcoholism. Much of the time when we hear or read shares about willingness it's all about "my" willingness. My personal experience with willingness is my best teacher for helping the new and not-so-new AA'ers. I never try to judge anyone's willingness to use against them or to say -- nah, don't waste your time. I do, however, use my experience with willingness to see if I try can to help a new person. I would love nothing more then to help everyone, but I cannot. I do need to help those willing to do what I have done. What "we" have done. That doesn't mean I cut less-willing members off. The truth is, though, I can do nothing but pray for them and encourage them to keep coming with an open mind. I try to remember that unless a person has hit their bottom, and I sure know what a bottom looks and feels like, they are still beyond human aid. AA recovery from alcoholism is not just about me. Thank you.
