Step Four
"Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves."

Step Four is the vigorous and painstaking effort to discover what the liabilities in each of us have been, and are.
I want to find exactly how, when, and where my natural desires have warped me.
I wish to look squarely at the unhappiness this has caused others and myself. . .
Without a willing and persistent effort to do this, there can be little sobriety or contentment for me.

- Daily Reflections, p. 100

Thought to Ponder . . .
I want the gift of an untroubled mind.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .
H O W = Honesty, Open-mindedness, Willingness.

Hi all, l am Kevin, an alcoholic and a member of AA.  The Fourth Step was something I wanted to get out of the way.  We alcoholics make things so complicated.  A moral inventory a truthful inventory of the rights and wrongs in our lives, and at the end we come to the conclusion that it's the story of our lives.  The Fourth Step is a discovery Step.  It should not be feared, we have already lived it.  Now, all we are doing is putting it to paper.  So by the end, we find the moral to the story.  What makes us tick, and why we are, how we are, are defects of character as well as the things that make us a good person.  Once we find out about ourselves we talk to another and then on to fixing our defects with the help of God.  Do we do this Step perfectly the first time?  l know l didn't.  God revealed to me only what he thought l could handle the first time.  Then, as more was revealed I did another and another.  Please, if you are struggling with this Step, don't over-complicate it.  Just do it and move on.  Thanks for letting me share.
