"Dry Drunk"
A dry drunk is a period of temporary insanity for the sober alcoholic.
Step Two says: "Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity."
A dry drunk is a self-imposed separation from others and from God.
We try to run on our own current, like a battery without a generator, which soon runs down and becomes quite dead.
- The Best of the Grapevine [Vol. 1], p. 19
Thought to Ponder . . .
Without change I am just a non-drinking drunk.

I'm Ravi, an alcoholic. I don't quite know how to put this all in two or three minutes but I will try and do just that. I have had many good fortunes since I stayed sober in AA, but somehow I have not been able to capitalize on them. Our literature says alcohol is a rapacious creditor and bleeds us out of self sufficiency. I would say alcoholism does that too, even when alcohol is absent -- my tendency to think alcoholically. I went through such an episode just the other day, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. And today I kept thinking how could I possibly avoid dry drunk episodes. The answer comes slowly. Here it is .. my version of doing recovery successfully and safely: 1.) Never for a second forget that I am an alcoholic. 2.) I will remain an alcoholic to my dying day. 3.) Never think of myself as superior to anyone in or out of the program and, in other words, stay humble. 4.) Always abide by the AA Responsibility Statement .. help others. If I stay true to these every breath of my life, I believe God will keep me from harm. Including doing damage through my own hands. Thanks.
