The Program
The tremendous fact for every one of us is that we have discovered a common solution.
We have a way out on which we can absolutely agree,
and upon which we can join in brotherly and harmonious action.
This is the great news this book carries to those who suffer from alcoholism.

I'm Peyton, an alcoholic. There are really two AA's. There is AA the Fellowship, where we get together for meetings and share our experience, strength and hope. Then, there is AA the Program in our Big Book which tells me precisely what I need to do to get and stay sober. It tells me how to take each Step, tells me what my disease is about, and why I can't control my drinking once I start. It has the design for living that I want today. Meetings are very important. I need them to hear others share their experience, strength and hope, and to share mine. Meetings help me to remember where I came from, and to see where I can go back to if I don't live the program. Meetings are where I find a sponsor, where I feel at home, and where I get to start practicing these Steps first. At meetings, I learn how to stay sober, and to not pick up that drink. I need to live the Program of AA. I don't do it perfectly by far -- no one does. With the Program of AA, I find the solution. With the Fellowship of AA, I find others learning to live in the solution. Thanks for showing me how it works, and that it does work if I work it.
