Moral Responsibility
Some strongly object to the AA position that alcoholism is an illness.
This concept, they feel, removes moral responsibility from alcoholics.
As any AA knows, this is far from true. . .
We use the fact of fatal illness to clamp the heaviest kind of moral obligation onto the sufferer,
the obligation to use AA's Twelve Steps to get well.

- As Bill Sees It, p. 32

Thought to Ponder . . .
It's not your fault, but it is your responsibility.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .
A A = Accountable Actions.

I am an alcoholic, and my name is Erik.  I looked up a couple of definitions of the word "moral" this morning, and both referred to behaviour or conduct, as well as right and wrong.  So for me, it means thinking about good conduct won't help, it's the actions I take that matter.  When I was drinking, my conduct and behaviour hurt me and all the people around me.  I often hear you guys saying "Do the next right thing."  And when I ask "how do I know what that is?" you tell me to ask my Higher Power .. pretty straight-forward instructions.  For me to stay sober, I believe there are 2 critical things that I must accept: 1) I am an alcoholic, no if's and's or but's.  Without a problem there can be no solution, and 2) I can't fix it.  I tried everything in my power before coming to AA and failed every time.  My Big Book says there is a Power greater than I who can fix it if I let him/her, so I will.  I was talking to my sponsor yesterday and he reminded me of one of the first things he told me.  When he gave me a Big Book he said, "Go home and read this and do what it says."  I read it right away but I am still working on doing what it says.  For me it is quite simple: I can do it your way and follow the program of AA or go back to doing it my way.  I think I will keep doing it your way.  Thanks for being here.
