A New Self
Gradually, I began to see another part of me emerging -- a grateful me, expecting nothing,
but sure that another power was beginning to guide me, counsel me, and direct my ways.  And I was not afraid.

Hi AA Family, I'm Peyton and I am a grateful alcoholic.  When I came to AA, I was ready for a new self.  I really couldn't stand the me I was.  I had stopped doing those things that work to help me maintain my spiritual condition and therefore my sobriety, and drank again.  I'm one of the blessed ones.  I made it back alive by the grace of God.  I became a lot more willing to do whatever it took to have real sobriety.  Those half measures really do avail nothing .. they don't give half sobriety; they give no sobriety.  A few years later now, I'm still digging, taking the Steps again, learning more about living this programme.  It's a life-long process and I'm really grateful for that, too.  Each time I walk through the Steps, I learn more about me.  I learn more ways to try to be that person that God wants me to be.  As it says in the Big Book, God will constantly disclose more to you and to us.  Without God and AA, I've no doubt I'd be dead today.  Instead, each day is a new beginning; a new me who hopefully will continue growing and learning, as long as I stay willing to keep going to any length.  Thanks for showing me how it works, and that it does work if I work it and keep on working it.
