Clear Ideas
Our description of the alcoholic, the chapter to the agnostic, and our personal adventures before and after make clear three pertinent ideas:
(a) That we were alcoholic and could not manage our own lives.
(b) That probably no human power could have relieved our alcoholism.
(c) That God could and would if He were sought.

- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 60

A Member Shares:
Hello folks, nice to be here with you.  I'm Charlie J., and I have Alcoholism.  Welcome, if you're new.  A bit of AA history:  The early AA members were all "low-bottom" alcoholics.  Combined, they had gone to extremes to stay stopped, and many were on their way to be locked up for good because of "Alcoholic Insanity."  So, that's one of the reasons God is in the book, Alcoholics Anonymous.  Nothing else had ever worked for these early AA's.  Then AA #1 had a "vital spiritual experience," and a God entered his life and dispelled his, 'need' to drink.  So we have these three pertinent ideas.  And as a result of God doing what no human had done in the cases of the early AA members, they found a solution that did work ... "God could and would if sought."  Thank you.
