Selfishness
Selfishness -- self-centeredness! That, we think, is the root of our troubles.
Driven by a hundred forms of fear, self-delusion, self-seeking, and self-pity,
we step on the toes of our fellows and they retaliate. . .
So our troubles, we think, are basically of our own making . . .
Above all, we alcoholics must be rid of this selfishness.
We must, or it kills us! God makes that possible.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 62
Thought to Ponder . . .
To raise my self esteem, I had to start acting in estimable ways.
AA-related 'Alconym' . . .
H A L T = Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired.

I'm Jan, an alcoholic. ARRGHHHHhhhhhhh! That one still creeps up too easily. It slinks around for too long before I kick the sucker out. Even after years of sobriety, selfishness is still ingrained in the crevices of my brain. Less now, yes, and I do have controls. It only comes out and runs my show if I let it -- by not nipping away any part or all of "Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired" so ego cannot have its way with me! Meetings and the constant unselfish support of invaluable AA friends have built up reserves of positive self-awareness -- the giving-self for the old taker-self that allows selflessness to take the place of selfishness. No matter how I use it, AA makes a better person of me. Thank you.
