Tradition Twelve
We of Alcoholics Anonymous believe that the principle of anonymity has an immense spiritual significance.
It reminds us that we are to place principles before personalities; that we are actually to practice a genuine humility.
This to the end that our great blessings may never spoil us;
that we shall forever live in thankful contemplation of Him who presides over us all.

- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 192

Thought to Ponder . . .
The Steps help me live with me; the Traditions help me live with you.

I'm Jerry, an alcoholic.  Welcome to everyone here today.  I came to AA at a young age.  I had been around many years by the time I was 25 -- many years.  I was not one who wanted to be an alcoholic, so I never ran around telling anyone I was going to AA.  I couldn't stay sober.  I thought I was way too young to be an alcoholic.  Thank God, I knew where to go when it was time.  Like many others who come to AA, I didn't care who knew I was in AA as long as I knew that's where I belonged.  That's what was important to me.  The area where I got sober in was brand-new AA brought to us by some old-timers from California.  They came to our area and got us all started on the right foot with good solid AA.  We had regular Big Book studies and Twelve and Twelve studies.  In the beginning, I just needed to get sober and put some sober or non-drinking time between me and my last drink.  This program did that for me.  After time, as I went to more and more BB and 12 and 12 meetings, I learned even more.  I do understand today what the Traditions are all about; they're about AA as a whole.  I'm one small part of this giant whole and I always have to remember that.  That's what allows me to continue to be here.  The Twelfth Tradition is very simple.  We have many who are happy to be sober, but have not gotten out of self -- that comes with work and time.  It talks about placing principles before personalities.  That's what it means to me.  It's about AA -- not me.  When I remember I'm only given a gift of sobriety, I will always remember why I'm here.  Thanks for being part of the AA organization and being here for me.
