Step Seven
"Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings."
We would like to be assured that the grace of God can do for us what we cannot do for ourselves.
We have seen that character defects based upon shortsighted or unworthy desires are the obstacles
that block our path toward these objectives.
We now clearly see that we have been making unreasonable demands upon ourselves, upon others, and upon God.
- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 76
Thought to Ponder . . .
A "shortcoming" is like a flat tire. A "character defect" is like driving on it.

Hi all, I am Kevin, an alcoholic and a member of AA. Sometimes I think I live in a constant state of Step Seven, humbly asking God to remove one shortcoming or another. As l go through my day I am always doing spot checks on myself. You could say l take Step Ten seriously, too. Taking that inventory always leads me to find my defects of character, and when these are realized, I am ready to have them removed. But that doesn’t mean they will magically disappear. No, I need to humbly ask God to remove them. Does that mean He will? No, sometimes I need to do more work on myself. I asked God to remove a shortcoming a while ago but He didn't. I came to realize that I need that defect to continue to avoid another that was much worse. When that job was done, God lifted the shortcoming and I got my serenity back. What a great program we have here! Thanks for showing me HOW it works.
