Step Six

"Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character."

Is our work solid so far?  Are the stones properly in place?
Have we skimped on the cement put into the foundation?  Have we tried to make mortar without sand?
If we can answer to our satisfaction, we then look at Step Six.  We have emphasized willingness as being indispensable. . .
If we still cling to something we will not let go, we ask God to help us be willing.

- Alcoholics Anonymous, pp. 75-76

Hello everyone, my name is Michael, and I am an alcoholic.  I was thinking about the pain of letting go sometimes.  For me, the reason why there is so little said for the Sixth Step in the Big Book is that the window of opportunity (pain) is so short.  When I first came into AA, I was in such great anguish that I was sure I wanted to let God take ALL OF IT right now.  But for sustained sobriety I have to be proactive.  I surely don't like to hang on anymore to things that hurt me.  I used to have a high tolerance for pain but not anymore.  I think just simply it's growing up.  I have to just trust and let go.  I always wondered how God does it, but now I know.  I am a changed man.  I have had that psychic change they talk about.  And for that, I am grateful.  It's a short Step but so, so, so important. Thank you.
