A New Beginning
Each day I can measure my life by trying to do a little better, by following God's will
and by making an effort to put the principles of our AA program into action.

- Daily Reflections, p. 374

Thought to Ponder . . .
What have I been given today?  Am I willing to reach out and grasp it?

I'm Lori, an alcoholic.  "Each day a new beginning."  So much meaning in such a short sentence.  When I was drinking, every day I'd decide that today would be the day that I wouldn't drink.  This lasted as a firm resolve for exactly as long as it took me to get to my stash.  Each day just like the one before.  Drinking, feeling like a failure, feeling afraid, feeling guilty.  Fun stuff.  Yep.  The actual feeling from the alcohol, that elusive thing we chase because it makes us euphoric, was amazingly brief and the aftermath always amazingly horrible.  But I was firmly in the grip of this disease and I couldn't *not* drink.  The insanity of thinking that somehow, this time, it would be different.  And then there came a day after a particularly bad series of days of drinking, when I actually didn't drink.  And I wasn't afraid.  I wasn't guilty.  I didn't feel like a failure.  Hmm...Maybe I was on to something here.  So, I tried it again the next day.  And, much like the insanity of drinking, doing the same thing and expecting different results, but getting the same results over and over, I got the same results again from not drinking.  No fear, no guilt, no shame.  So now every day truly is a new beginning.  It's said that whoever woke up earliest has the most sobriety in the room.  We only ever have one day at a time.  And that's the miracle of a new beginning.  Every day that I don't drink, I can begin a new day; a day without the dark cloud of alcoholism hanging over me.  A day drenched with the sunlight of the spirit.  And, it's a lovely thing.  Thanks for letting me share.
