Hope
Hope is the key that unlocks the door of discouragement.
The program promises me that if I do not pick up the first drink today, I will always have hope.

- Daily Reflections, p. 70

Thought to Ponder . . .
Hope sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible.

I'm Steve, an alcoholic.  I didn't have any hope when I came to AA - just desperation.  My first meeting gave me an inkling of hope that I didn't have to do this alone, and that there were folks who really gave a damn whether I lived or died.  They gave me the best info but I could only take in a small amount.  Despite the fact I hadn't had a drink in 6 weeks prior to my first meeting, I wasn't experiencing any improvements in my mental or spiritual state.  I'm really grateful I survived the drinking /drugging.  Early sobriety was tough for me, not because I wasn't willing but because my problems became even more acute without the booze to kill the pain and confusion.  The best way to describe me back then is that I was a 29-year-old in a pensioner's body coupled with the mind of an Alzheimer’s victim.  Although I couldn't retain a page of reading from the books, I kept at it.  One day at a time, I began to come out of my alcohol-induced coma.  My primary purpose back then, and still is today, to not take that first drink and do the best I can to improve.  Over time I have improved.  I can speak without stammering.  I don’t know if I have given anyone else any hope but I sure have given myself some.  Thank you.
