The First One
If we do not take the first drink, we never get drunk.
Therefore, instead of planning never to get drunk,
or trying to limit the number of drinks or the amount of alcohol,
we have learned to concentrate on avoiding only one drink: the first one.

Hello fine Family, I'm Lance, an alkie and grateful to be here again with you at this Beginner's meeting.  Anyone who woke up today is, in a sense, new.  But if you talk to an active alkie and say, "just don't drink today," you'll probably get an empty stare.  We presume that this applies to the man or woman who has been in such pain at such a low point, they are now willing to do about anything to stay sober.  But even then, without applying the Steps, we are nothing better than a dry drunk.  After what most of us went through, we didn’t come this far to be miserable.  Thank God.  Without those blasted Steps, I'm just pizzin in the wind.  Looking back on my drinking days, half the time I was in some sort of Bonnie and Clyde mentality: "Surely I can pull off just one more drunk with impunity; surely, I can make up for all the mess I caused, like no one would notice."  That’s wishful thinking, at best.  There are consequences and sometimes very grave ones, for this kind of irrationality.  I like to stay close to AA, even it’s just to hear the message.  Thanks for letting me share.  I love you guys and gals.
