No Reservations

If we are planning to stop drinking, there must be no reservation of any kind,
nor any lurking notion that someday we will be immune to alcohol.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 33

Thought to Ponder . . .
If we want to quit drinking, we are going to have to quit drinking.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .
A A = Absolute Abstinence.

I am Mike, a very grateful alcoholic.  NO RESERVATIONS!  Here is something I have learned in AA:  Just to the extent an alcoholic believes alcohol is a solution for any problem, it will be.  On my second day sober I told an old-timer I couldn't drink.  He smiled and said, "The hell you say!  You can drink.  You've been proving that.  You can't drink safely and without consequences."  I said, "I can't stop."  Again, he smiled, "You can stop.  You're not drinking now.  Your biggest problem, Mike, is you can't stay stopped, not without the 12 Steps of AA and a Higher Power."  You see, knowing I had a problem never solved the problem.  I do believe the harder I tried to control or stop, the more I drank.  What I needed was a solution to the problem.  My Higher Power was alcohol.  I needed a power greater than that alcohol, and it took effort on my part to come to know that Higher Power I now call God.  And today I am truly grateful to be an alcoholic who has found recovery and a way of life that is so much better than I could have ever imagined.  Thanks.
