Self-righteousness

This odd trait of mind and emotion,
this perverse wish to hide a bad motive underneath a good one,
permeates human affairs from top to bottom.
This subtle and elusive kind of self-righteousness can underlie the smallest act or thought.
Learning daily to spot, admit, and correct these flaws
is the essence of character-building and good living.
- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, pp. 94-95

Thought to Ponder . . .
Self-righteousness is a loud din raised to drown the voice of guilt within us.

Good morning everyone, my name is Michael and I am an alcoholic.  For the newcomer, resentments mean recurring bitterness or anger or hurt.  When I came to AA, I was full of fear and anger and hurt, but by working the program, praying, and forgiving took care of some of my major resentments.  Once, I had a minor argument with my uncle.  I drove to my grand-sponsor's house who lay dying in his bed and I complained and whined.  Eventually, I quieted down.  He looked me in the eye and said, "You have to do better than that."  Lesson learned.  When I am not as spiritually fit as I could be, I get self-righteous and point fingers like an octopus.  I call it "building a case."  I could be an expert prosecutor.  But, lo and behold!  There is a Step for that; it's called Step Ten.  It holds me in check, and when I get petty, I think of that dying man and realize that there are more important things in life.  One more hint: I find that being actively loving and kind and patient with others who might be sick preempts a lot of resentment.  Thank you.
