Staying Away from the First Drink
If we do not take the first drink, we never get drunk.
Therefore, instead of planning never to get drunk, or trying to limit the number of drinks
or the amount of alcohol, we have learned to concentrate on avoiding only one drink:
the first one.

Thought to Ponder . . .
The first drink has the last say.

I am Mike a very grateful alcoholic. Both topics kind of go together. The first and foremost thing for me was to get through the Steps. That promise of not fighting alcohol comes in Step 10. So many want the results, but aren’t willing to take the action. Dr. Bob was a good example of what to do when those thoughts of drinking come; nothing insures immunity from the drink better than intense work with other alcoholics. Help set up a meeting, clean coffee pots, greet the newcomers, give a ride to one who needs it. And here are a couple of things that helped me early on; an old-timer told me, "Mike, you can’t keep the birds from flying overhead but you don't have to let them nest in your hair. When those thoughts occur, for God's sake DON'T FEED THEM! Read your Big Book, call your sponsor, and get to a meeting." It's hard to think about two things at one time. Today, I don't think about drinking. I don’t even think much about not drinking. God has removed that obsession as I continue to live AA's Twelve Steps. Thanks.
