A Symptom

Our liquor was but a symptom.
We had to get down to causes and conditions.

Hi everyone, I'm Lisa, an alcoholic.  I went to my trusted old dictionary for a definition — this time for the definition of ‘symptom’, and here it is: "something that indicates the existence of something else."  Yup, that was my problem.  I started drinking when I was a teenager.  My drinking progressed because I felt so uncomfortable with my feelings I didn't know what to do with them.  And then, as I grew older, I was living under the influence of booze, so I still didn't learn any way to work with my feelings — I drank when I started to feel or think about them and made them go away.  So, having been under the influence for some 30 years, drinking truly was a thing that hid, but indicated the existence of something else.  For me, AA opened the door to "me."  My sponsor, the program, you guys, helped me break out of being that frightened and confused and self-absorbed teenager.  That symptom is gone as long as I stay connected to you guys and my Higher Power.  This life of sobriety was what I was searching for, what I needed to live a good life — a full life.  And it taught me what love really is.  Thanks for being here for me and for helping me stay sober today.
