Pray

Prayer has become a habit with me.  Anytime is the time for prayer:
in the street, in the factory, sitting still, walking about,
or actively engaged upon some task.
I must always bear in mind, like a good parent, God often says no.
And the simplest prayer is “God, thank you, thank you.”
I have so much to be thankful for, and sobriety tops the list.

Hi, I'm Lucy, an alcoholic.  You know, I remember one particular day back in my early sobriety, before the obsession had been removed.  I was getting ready for work and wanted to stay home that day.  I had a plan to go drink but I knew that wasn't really what I wanted.  I actually wanted to stay sober, but the desire to drink was so very strong.  I did what I was told to do.  Pray.  At that point in time, it was quite literally a "foxhole" prayer..."God please help me!"  But it worked, not only did the desire leave, I was able to get myself to work and make it through the whole day.  From that day on, I know how much of a miracle — A MIRACLE! — it is, that I made it through the day sober.  It's a miracle I was able to survive my last drunk too, I was one of the many who shouldn't have made it.  Every night I get in bed and thank God and thank Him in awe that I made it through the day sober.  Although I grew up with the Catholic "punishing" God, AA has helped me learn my God better, to know that He is not only a loving, forgiving God but He is actually quite a joker, too.  Often I go in to the day or a situation with expectations of how the situation will be, and so often is the situation not what I expected.  That's another miracle — how things always work out better than I could have ever planned.  I heard once that you live life forward, but understand it backwards.  Such a true statement.  I believe I was guided into AA to get to know my God better; to learn that He does love me, and He wants me just where I am.  Thanks.
