A New Life
Sobriety is only a bare beginning; it is only the first gift of the first awakening.
If more gifts are to be received, our awakening must go on.
As it does go on, we can find that bit by bit we can discard the old life
—the one that did not work—
for a new life that can and does work under any conditions whatever.

I'm Larry, and I'm an alcoholic.  In years past I sometimes made New Years’ resolutions.  I really can't remember a single one that I ever lived up to, though.  I always sucked at commitments, perseverance, etc.  My character defects invariably won out over any resolution I could make.  I don't want to pooh-pooh the meeting topic [New Years’ Resolutions].  But, frankly, it goes against the grain of the way the oldtimers taught me to live: “Staying in the now.  Not projecting.  One day at a time.”  I know you get it.  So, rather than project, I now like to use the end of the year to reflect.  To look back on that past that I don't wish to shut the door on.  To do a yearly inventory much in the fashion of my daily inventory.  I believe God places my character defects squarely in my path for me to stumble on, to fall down, to skin my nose, to tear my pants.  And I believe he does this for a reason; to get me to recognize them, not to curse them then kick them off the path out of my way.  But to stop and look at what tripped me up, to inventory it, to own it, and to tell on myself about it.  Then, to ask His guidance and direction to help me remove it.  As I reflect on this year, I see many mistakes.  A failed marriage tops that list.  And the pain associated with that failure is my skinned nose.  Now, then, what was my part?  What God-given instincts were I misusing?  And how do I move into forgiveness and out of resentment?  I already know how to do all these things.  You guys have already shown me.  Now it's my job to take the action—to move myself closer to God and become that better person I want to be.  We in western civilization live in a lot of dogma and ritual.  It's drilled into us from birth.  And it's OK if it works for you.  But New Years’ resolutions, in my own personal experience, really aren't worth much.  Prayer and meditation works.
