An Effective Defense

Once more: The alcoholic at certain times has no effective mental defense against the first drink.
Except in a few cases, neither he nor any other human being can provide such a defense.
His defense must come from a Higher Power.

- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 43

Thought to Ponder . . .
The ultimate defense against the first drink is a spiritual one.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .
H E L P  =  His Ever-Loving Presence.

Good afternoon everyone, my name is Michael, and I am an alcoholic.  I have had some good sponsors over the years.  I was pretty wild and smart for my britches when I came in.  My first sponsor got me on the Steps before I could "outthink them," thankfully.  I didn't know what a program was, but the Big Book says here is a program of recovery.  Oh.  Anyways, for me the Steps not only led to sobriety but a really full and rich life.  I don't have one issue I could run the Steps through and not come up with a solution.  It’s a way for me to establish a relationship with a Higher Power that prevents me from taking that first drink.  My Higher Power is the only defense I have against that first drink for me and I am so grateful there is a solution.  Thank you.
